What time is it now in the most-converted zones?

Live clocks for the ten destinations people convert to most, with today's difference from Eastern Time. Each links to an hour-by-hour table.

How does time zone conversion actually work?

A clock reading such as "3:00 PM" is a wall-clock time: it means nothing until you say where. What is shared around the world is the instant, a single point on the UTC timeline. Every correct conversion goes through that instant:

  1. Find the offset that applied in the source zone on that date. New York on July 15, 2027 is on EDT, UTC−4.
  2. Remove it to get the instant: 3:00 PM + 4 h = 19:00 UTC.
  3. Look up the destination's offset at that instant and apply it: Tokyo is UTC+9, so 19:00 + 9 h = 4:00 AM, already Friday.

Skipping step 1 is where most errors start. A fixed rule such as "Tokyo is 14 hours ahead" is only true while ET is on standard time; in July the gap is 13 hours. The converter repeats these three steps for the exact date you enter, using the rules built into your browser. The UTC offset guide explains why ET's offset is negative and how it flips between −5 and −4.

One instant, 19:00 UTC on July 15, 2027, shown on three wall clocks: 3:00 PM EDT Thursday in New York, 8:00 PM BST Thursday in London and 4:00 AM JST Friday in Tokyo 19:00 UTC New York London Tokyo 3:00 PM 8:00 PM 4:00 AM EDT · UTC−4 · Thu BST · UTC+1 · Thu JST · UTC+9 · Fri
One instant, three wall clocks. Only the instant is universal.

Why does the time difference change during the year?

Because both ends can move. Eastern Time shifts by an hour on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. A destination with no daylight saving (India, China, Japan, Arizona, UTC itself) stays put, so the gap changes on exactly those US dates. A destination with its own daylight saving keeps the usual gap only while both sides are in the same season, and Australia and New Zealand are in the opposite season, so their gap swings by two hours over the year.

When are the mismatch weeks?

The US and Canada switch earlier in spring and later in autumn than Europe and the southern hemisphere. In the weeks between, the familiar gap is off by one hour. The autumn 2026 window with Europe closed on November 1, 2026; these are the next ones:

Europe changes at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of March and October, Australia's southeastern states on the first Sundays of April and October, and New Zealand on the first Sunday of April and the last Sunday of September. Within North America there is a smaller version: each zone switches at 2:00 AM local time, so on Sunday, March 14, 2027 Pacific Time is four hours behind ET from 3:00 to 6:00 AM EDT, and on Sunday, November 7, 2027 only two hours behind from 1:00 to 4:00 AM EST.

What happens when a conversion crosses midnight or the date line?

East Asia and Australia are 12 to 16 hours ahead of ET, so an Eastern evening is already the next morning there: 8:00 PM EST on Friday, January 15, 2027 is 10:00 AM Saturday in Tokyo and 12:00 PM Saturday in Sydney. The reverse catches people out more often: a Monday 9:00 AM start in Tokyo is Sunday 7:00 PM EST, or 8:00 PM EDT in July. Going west the date moves back: 1:00 AM ET is 10:00 PM the previous evening in Pacific Time. The converter labels every result with the destination's own weekday, so check it before you send an invite.

What about the hour that is skipped or repeated?

On Sunday, March 14, 2027, Eastern clocks jump from 1:59 AM EST straight to 3:00 AM EDT, so 2:00–2:59 AM never happens. Enter 2:30 AM and the converter reads it as 3:30 AM EDT, the instant a clock left on EST would show 2:30. On Sunday, November 7, 2027, 1:00–1:59 AM happens twice, first as EDT and an hour later as EST. The converter uses the first; add an hour to the result if you mean the second. Overnight jobs and flight times are where these two cases matter.

What are the most common conversion mistakes?

Frequently asked questions

Does the converter use my computer's time zone?

No. The time you type is always read as Eastern Time (America/New_York), and the date box starts on today's date in ET. Your device's zone setting plays no part, so the result is the same wherever you are.

How do I convert from another zone into Eastern Time?

Convert any time on that date and read the line under the result, for example "9.5 hours ahead of Eastern Time". Move the foreign time back by that amount, or forward if the zone is behind ET. The individual EST-to pages list every hour of the day.

Can I trust results for dates years ahead?

They follow the rules your browser knows from the IANA Time Zone Database. When a government changes its rules, results change only once browsers ship the update. British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Cuba all changed theirs in 2026, so they are not offered here.

Which time zone should I put in a calendar invite?

Choose a city-based zone such as New York or Toronto rather than a fixed label like EST or UTC−5. The calendar then applies daylight saving for each date, and every invitee sees the correct local time.

Why does the converter show a different weekday?

The result is labelled with the weekday at the destination. An Eastern evening is already the next morning in Asia and Australia, and an Eastern early morning is still the previous evening in Hawaii.
